Advanced Ordinary Business Deductions
This Group program provides practicing CPAs and other tax professionals with an advanced review of ordinary business deductions and related planning considerations. The program revisits the §162 “ordinary and necessary” framework and the §§263/263A capitalization boundary; compares §179 expensing with bonus depreciation; reviews the tangible property regulation safe harbors for repairs and improvements; examines research expenditures under §174 and the §41 credit; maps the deductibility of insurance premiums under §§162 and 264; surveys §831(b) captive insurance arrangements and related compliance considerations; and discusses business overhead expense insurance. A case study integrates these concepts into a full deduction review and highlights where specialist analysis may be warranted.
